What is screen printing?

Screen printing (also called silk screen printing) applies images to boxes by pressing ink through a mesh.

A squeegee forces thick ink through a mesh that carries a stencil of the image.

The print is then dried under a special lamp and hot air.

Each stencil prints one colour, so for multi-colour images a separate stencil is made for each colour.

Printing is priced per colour.

At Boxes, you can order screen printing for branded packaging, and we will apply your logo or other images to your boxes to a high standard.

Frequently asked questions about screen printing

  • What is screen printing?

    Screen printing applies images using a special stencil that ink is pushed through. Under pressure, the ink passes through the open areas of the mesh and transfers the image to the material. If a design has several colours, a separate stencil is made for each colour.

  • How is screen printing different from other printing methods?

    Screen printing works not only on flat surfaces but also on curved objects, and on textures from soft to hard. So you can choose any material for your boxes and still get a high-quality, rich print. Another key feature is the thick ink layer, which gives the pigments high lightfastness.

  • What inks are used for screen printing?

    The method works with many types of inks and coatings: suspension inks, fluorescent inks and a wide range of pigments, including coarse pigments. Any colour can be mixed and printed.

  • What are the stages of screen printing?

    The main stages are making the box components, preparing the stencils, printing and drying the ink.

  • Is screen printing suitable for large box orders?

    Yes, it is the ideal printing method for large box orders. Because making the stencils takes time, screen printing is most efficient on large runs. You can order any quantity from 50 boxes, with delivery across the EU.

  • What are the lead times for screen-printed boxes?

    On average, screen-printed boxes take 10–14 working days to produce after artwork approval. Depending on the complexity and size of the order, this can take longer, because the stencils take time to make. We always confirm the exact lead time when you order, and we stick to it.

  • Is a screen-printed image durable?

    Yes. The ink penetrates the texture of the material and forms a durable layer, so the print is lightfast.

  • How much does screen printing cost at Boxes?

    You can check prices in our price calculator or ask us during a consultation. The price depends on several factors: the size of the boxes, the materials and the quantity. It also depends on the number of print colours: one, two or more. Get in touch, and we will review your project and send you a quote.

When to choose screen printing for your boxes

Screen printing is a popular way to apply branding to printed products, including boxes. It produces sharp, high-quality images, so it is often used for boxes with logos or other design elements. At Boxes, we offer professional screen printing, so your boxes become instantly recognisable packaging for your products.

How screen printing works

In screen printing, ink is pushed through a special mesh. The mesh acts as a stencil carrying the shape of the image. Under pressure, the ink passes through the open areas and leaves the image on the surface.

This printing method has many advantages:

  • it works on a wide variety of textures, with no restrictions on materials;
  • it allows large-format printing on sheets and products of any size;
  • it gives high-quality results with a full range of shades, so you can choose exactly the colour you want;
  • it produces bright, saturated colours that keep their tone even on dark or coloured surfaces;
  • the thick ink layer creates raised, tactile prints.

Screen printing also lets you create special ink effects: metallic, pearlescent, fluorescent and more, because the method works with many types of inks and pigments. This means you can create branded boxes with a distinctive, attractive look.

What designs can be screen printed?

Each stencil prints one colour. For multi-colour designs, a separate stencil is made for each colour, so this method is best for designs with only a few colours: a one-colour logo, a two- or three-colour illustration, prints and ornaments.
Keep in mind that each colour prints as a solid tone, so gradients are not possible. Designs should also avoid very fine or small details, as these are difficult to print and will not come out sharp.

When to choose screen printing

Screen printing is a good choice for boxes for all kinds of branded products: boxes of any size and shape for clothing, shoes, cosmetics, home decor, equipment and more.
Choose screen printing if you need:

  • a highly wear-resistant design that stands up to moisture, temperature and fading;
  • your logo or image on the box in bright, saturated colours;
  • a large print run at the lowest possible price.

Printing through a mesh screen gives a strong, high-quality image that sets off the overall box design. You can use it to apply a company name, logo or any print to decorate your box. It also works with our other services, such as box wrapping, because it can print on materials with different textures.
Boxes screen prints boxes to a high standard. We use professional equipment and inspect every box carefully after printing, so you receive boxes with crisp images. Order screen-printed boxes from Boxes and pack your products in distinctive branded boxes.
