How to Make a DIY Gift Box
The tradition of giving gifts is popular all over the world. A gift can say a lot about your relationship with someone. Its value is much greater than its cost, because every gift is primarily about emotions.
Choosing a gift can be challenging: it takes taste and knowledge of the recipient’s preferences. However, how you present it is just as important.
Depending on the occasion, gift packaging can also vary to emphasise the nature of the event, the gift itself or the recipient.
Show your creative side and you’ll surely make a good impression! You can make your own unique gift boxes in various sizes: from cute miniatures for small surprises to larger ones for bulky items. Making DIY packaging is quick and relatively easy.
With the right materials, you can create impressive packaging with your own hands. Ordinary cardboard, kraft paper, laminated board and thick paper work best. If you’re unsure about the design, the internet offers plenty of design collections in different styles, as well as ready-made templates for the most popular box styles.
To make a DIY gift box, you’ll need:
- Cardboard
- Utility knife or scissors
- PVA glue or a hot glue gun
- Decorative paper, paints, tape, etc. (depending on your chosen design)
- Craft tools such as a ruler, pencil, compass, masking tape, etc. (as needed)
Start by cutting the cardboard to the size and shape of the base. If you are sizing the box to your gift, leave a little extra space on all sides. This lets you fill the gap with padding to protect the contents. A margin of about 1–3 cm usually works well.
- Next, cut a second piece of cardboard the same size as the first. Since the base will support the walls, it should be at least two layers thick, or better still three, for extra stability and strength.
- Glue the layers of the base together and make sure they dry evenly. This keeps the structure stable. You can also use weights to stop the material from bending while it dries.
- Then cut a long strip to form the side walls. Its width should match the height you calculated for the sides, and it should be long enough to wrap around the entire perimeter of the base. Don’t forget to leave a little extra material to make joining the walls easier.
- Form the sides of the box by gluing the strip to the base, lining up the bottom edges of the sides exactly with the base. A small set square or ruler will help you align the corners correctly.
- For extra stability and strength, repeat the process with a second layer of the main material. Cut a second strip of cardboard of the same width but slightly longer than the first, to allow for the thickness of the walls already in place.
- Form the walls from the second layer of material, adjusting them to the shape, and glue them in place.
- To make the lid, trace the top of the box onto a sheet of cardboard and add a small margin so the lid slides on and off easily. Then cut out the lid top along the outline.
- For the side wall of the lid, cut a long strip of cardboard and fold it to the shape of the lid.
- Attach the side wall to the lid top, keeping the walls perpendicular to it.
- If you wish, decorate the walls by gluing on decorative or kraft paper, ribbons, glitter and other embellishments.
- Making a DIY gift box can be an enjoyable way to show your loved ones how much you respect, love and care for them.
- Now you know how to make a box with your own hands, and you can create packaging of any size and shape.
However, keep in mind that handmade boxes have both pros and cons, as well as specific uses. Some products need professionally manufactured packaging. Ordering it from a manufacturer can significantly improve the look of your gift.
Key advantages of factory-made packaging
Variety of shapes and opening styles
Classic flap boxes are better for shipping or storage, while lid and base boxes, magnetic closure boxes and drawer boxes are better suited for gifts.
Material
Material quality is crucial in packaging, especially for premium products. Cardboard offers plenty of scope for personalisation, but high-quality lamination or finishing is almost impossible to achieve at home. Other processes are broadly similar; the difference lies in the quality of execution.

If you want to pleasantly surprise your loved ones, custom gift packaging is exactly what you need. Approach the packaging design with care. High-quality printing works wonders, and our designers will gladly help you bring your boldest ideas to life.
